The Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers (NiPeTE) has announced a rebranding initiative that will see the professional body adopt a new name—the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers—as part of strategic efforts to enhance professionalism and accelerate growth in the country’s oil and gas sector.
Engr. Prisca Kanebi, Chairperson of NiPeTE, made this known during a press briefing in Lagos, where she outlined the Institute’s renewed vision and commitment to national development.
“We are charting a focused path that aligns with Nigeria’s economic aspirations,” Kanebi said. “Our goal is to contribute meaningfully through professionalism, technical excellence, and evidence-based policy support.”

She revealed that the name change has been approved by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), following broad consultations with industry stakeholders and academia. The Institute has also secured approval from the National Technical Board for its certification programmes and completed the second reading of its Bill at the National Assembly.
“The date for the public hearing will be announced soon. This rebranding reflects the scope and relevance of our work across both petroleum and gas disciplines,” she added.
Kanebi called on practising petroleum engineers—locally and in the diaspora—to register with the Institute, noting that the transition to a statutory body will elevate its influence in the energy sector.
She also addressed recent controversies, dismissing a disclaimer issued by a group allegedly trying to discredit the Institute’s leadership.
“Let me be clear: the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is not involved in any internal dispute. The actions of a few individuals are politically motivated attempts to hijack the system,” she stated.
Kanebi reaffirmed that the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Executive Committee, and diaspora members remain unified in their support for the Institute’s mission.
