Oyo Government Stands Firm on Shanty Demolition

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to demolishing illegal structures around schools despite public complaints.

Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), stated this during an inspection in Ibadan.

Leading a team to the Jemibewon area of Sabo, Ibadan, Aderemi emphasized the government’s resolve to uphold environmental laws.

She said the demolition exercise aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive issued on October 24, 2023.

The visit followed a petition dated February 17, 2025, highlighting shanties around St. Gabriel School at Jemibewon.

Aderemi noted that affected occupants had been served notices and given multiple warnings to vacate the area.

Officials also engaged with community leaders, including the ‘Seriki n Sabo,’ to ensure compliance before enforcement.

Despite opposition, the government insists that restoring order around schools remains a legal and environmental necessity.
