Lagos Cautions Residents on Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding

The Lagos State Government has warned residents about above-normal rainfall and delayed cessation extending into December 2025.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this during the Seasonal Climate Prediction briefing held in Alausa.

He stated that Lagos will experience a longer rainy season, starting in March and ending in early December.

Wahab disclosed that Lagos will receive an annual rainfall of 1,936mm, surpassing the 1991–2020 long-term recorded average.

The forecast, based on the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) neutral phase, predicts increased rainfall across Lagos State.

Ikeja is expected to receive 1,900mm of rainfall from April 2 to December 2, according to predictions.

Badagry will receive 1,978mm of rainfall between March 30 and December 4, experiencing a significantly extended wet season.

The commissioner warned about potential flash floods, especially in low-lying areas prone to heavy rainfall accumulation.

Strong winds are expected at the season’s start and end, possibly disrupting flights and economic activities statewide.

The Lagos government is intensifying flood control measures while collaborating with NiMet on climate adaptation strategies.

Residents are urged to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and take necessary precautions against impending heavy rainfall.
