A fire outbreak on Monday evening destroyed an electronics shop owned by Mohammed Abba Malam, Chairman of the Electronics Sellers Association, at Monday Market, Maiduguri, Borno State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started around 7 p.m., burning home appliances worth millions of naira before emergency responders arrived.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that the police received a distress call and promptly deployed officers to secure the area.

“The shop belongs to Mohammed Abba Malam, Chairman of the Electronics Sellers Association. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Yakubu Muhammad, was alerted by Monday Market management about the fire outbreak,” Daso explained.

He noted that the police were the first responders, preventing looting while coordinating with firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

A trader, Hassan Abdullahi, confirmed that no casualties were recorded, though the fire destroyed the chairman’s shop before it was contained.

“I had already left the market when the fire started. But by morning, I saw the aftermath. Only the chairman’s shop was affected,” he said.

The cause of the fire and the total value of damaged goods remain unknown as authorities continue their investigations. Attempts to reach the state fire service spokesperson for further details were unsuccessful.
