A heavy rainstorm forced the suspension of all flight operations at Akure Airport, damaging critical infrastructure and essential equipment severely.
The storm, which swept through the region on Monday, rendered Akure Airport’s control tower unusable by destroying sensitive devices completely.
Sources within Akure Airport confirmed that commercial flights remain grounded indefinitely due to extensive damage caused by the severe rainstorm.
“The thunderstorm destroyed network time protocols, encoders, air conditioners, and computers inside the control tower,” an airport official confirmed.
“Windows shattered, ceilings collapsed, and the entire facility became inoperable, significantly disrupting all essential services at the Airport entirely,” he added.

Additionally, seven buildings housing Airport staff had their roofs torn off, worsening the impact of Monday’s destructive rainstorm.
Beyond Akure Airport, the storm wreaked havoc on surrounding communities, destroying homes, schools, churches, vehicles, and multiple electricity poles instantly.
Authorities have yet to announce when necessary repairs will begin or when Airport flight operations will finally resume.
