Lagos Government Cracks Down on Fake VINs, Concealed Number Plates

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists using fake Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and concealing number plates.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, emphasized the security risks and legal consequences associated with these infractions.
Giwa stated that the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018 mandates proper display of VINs and number plates statewide.

Zero Tolerance for Violations

The government maintains zero tolerance for fraudulent VINs and obscured plates, warning that offenders will face strict prosecution.
Giwa stressed that concealing number plates obstructs security agencies’ efforts in tackling “One-Chance” robberies and traffic offenses.
He urged motorists to immediately remove coverings from number plates and stop using fake VINs to avoid arrest.

Security and Safety Concerns
Giwa highlighted the Lagos State Vehicle Identification Database’s role in tracking vehicles, identifying owners, and recovering stolen cars.
“The concealment of number plates hampers crime-fighting efforts and endangers public safety,” Giwa stated during his announcement.
He reiterated that all vehicles must display VINs and number plates clearly, as required by existing state laws.

Government’s Commitment to Enforcement
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining safety on all public roads.
Giwa assured that offenders caught violating these regulations would be swiftly arrested and prosecuted without exception.
“Every vehicle, like every individual, must bear its assigned number plate without obstruction,” he firmly concluded.
