Airtel Raises Data Prices by Up to 50% Amid Rising Costs

Airtel Nigeria, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, has increased its data pricing by up to 50%, effective Monday.

This tariff adjustment, which affects various data bundles, is part of broader industry efforts to manage escalating operational costs due to inflation and forex volatility.

Though Airtel has not issued an official statement, the price hike follows a general trend among telecom operators seeking tariff reviews. These are intended to mitigate the impact of increasing inflation and currency fluctuations.

In addition to data tariff changes, Airtel raised voice call charges over the weekend.

An Airtel official confirmed the revision, acknowledging the increased costs but clarifying that the hike wasn’t exactly 50%. The operator reassured customers of continued affordability, with new pricing structures available on its website.

The new plans include:

  • N50 for 40MB (1 day)
  • N100 for 100MB (1 day)
  • N200 for 200MB (3 days)
  • N350 for 1GB (1 day)
  • N350 for 350MB (7 days)
  • N500 for 750MB + 1GB YouTube Night (7 days)
  • N500 for 1GB + 1GB YouTube Night (7 days)
  • N500 for 2GB (2 days)
  • N1500 for 5GB (7 days)

This adjustment follows similar moves by MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, which also raised its data and call tariffs in line with the NCC’s approval. Both operators face rising inflation, forex volatility, and network expansion costs.
