In a bid to improve waste management and environmental sanitation, the Ogun State Government has mandated all residential houses in the state to containerise their wastes by providing covered waste containers in front of their premises.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Abayomi Hunye, announced this directive in Abeokuta on Sunday, emphasizing the need for a more organised waste collection system at the domestic level.
Hunye stated that the new order aims to integrate more residential premises into the state’s waste management system, preventing indiscriminate dumping and open burning of waste, which negatively impact the environment. He added that residents are free to purchase their own covered containers from the open market or collaborate with Private Sector Participants (PSP) assigned to their communities to acquire them.
To ensure compliance, residents will pay a subsidised waste bill to PSP collectors, while the state government will augment the cost to sustain efficient waste collection.
“The waste bill serves as proof of subscription to waste management services and is now recognized for use in local, national, international, and financial documentation,” Hunye explained.
For premises in areas where waste trucks cannot reach, Hunye assured residents that waste tricycles would be deployed to service them.
He called on residents and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to cooperate in ensuring the success of this initiative, stressing that proper waste disposal is essential for a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
