Prince Oluseyi Lufadeju, a revered figure in the housing sector, urban development, and public service, in Nigeria, has passed away.
His remarkable career and contributions have left an indelible mark across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond particularly the continent’s housing sector.
Born into the revered Obara family of the Balagbayo ruling house of Ijesaland, Osun state, Nigeria. Prince Lufadeju received his early education in Ilesa, Igbajo, and Benin City before earning a bachelor’s degree from the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). He proceeded to the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, and completed additional coursework at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prince Lufadeju began his illustrious and sterling career, spanning over three decades in 1974 with the Nigeria Building Society, followed by significant roles at the Federal Housing Authority and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. His expertise and leadership were instrumental and key in the establishment of the Urban and Regional Planning Division within the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Environment. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the Managing Director/CEO of Shelter Afrique in Nairobi, championing affordable housing initiatives and housing finance initiatives across Africa. His dedication was recognized when he was appointed National Chairman of the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, Nigeria Chapter.
In addition to his prolific and professional Career, Prince Lufadeju was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, the Association of American Geographers, and the American Institute of Planners. He played a pivotal role in the development of national projects such as the Master Plan for the Aladja Steel Township and the Abeokuta Steel Township.
Prince Lufadeju’s contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Lion from Senegal and the Nigeria Housing Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Affordable Housing Hall of Fame in 2021.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Prince Lufadeju was dedicated to social and community service. He held leadership roles in organizations such as Rotary Club International, the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, and the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
Prince Ebenezer Oluseyi Lufadeju Transited unto glory on Wednesday 22nd of January, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife and four children, Adedamola, Mofoluwaso, Oluwatoyin, and Adebowale, as well as six grandchildren. Prince Lufadeju’s legacy of dedication, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come.
