Saraki Calls for Urgent Action on Nigeria's Failing Roads After Niger Tragedy

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of Nigerian roads in the wake of a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Niger State, which claimed over 80 lives and left many injured over the weekend.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Sunday, Saraki described the tragedy as a sobering reflection of the state of the nation’s road infrastructure and the pressing need for immediate intervention.

“The horrific petrol tanker explosion that occurred yesterday at Dikko Junction, Niger State, claiming the lives of at least 80 people and injuring many more, is a devastating tragedy that demands immediate attention and action,” he stated.

Saraki highlighted the underlying causes of such incidents, pointing to the dangerous combination of deteriorating roads and poorly maintained vehicles, which create a deadly environment for road users. He stressed that these systemic issues must be addressed urgently to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of Nigerians.

“This incident is a grim reminder of the risks Nigerians take to survive and highlights the poor state of our road infrastructure and inadequate vehicle maintenance, which together contribute to such accidents,” he remarked.

Calling for decisive action, Saraki urged authorities to prioritize the repair and modernization of Nigeria’s road network while implementing stricter vehicle safety standards. He emphasized that safeguarding lives should be at the forefront of the government’s agenda.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Niger State government, the victims, their families, and the entire community affected by this terrible loss,” Saraki added, extending his condolences to those impacted by the tragedy.
