In a decisive move to address safety concerns in the construction industry, Kenya’s National Construction Authority (NCA) has introduced strict measures to clamp down on unlicensed contractors and unsafe buildings.

This initiative coincides with the launch of the National Building Code, a landmark policy designed to tackle the frequent building collapses that have plagued the country’s residential and commercial spaces.

The new Building Code outlines rigorous licensing criteria, enhanced inspection protocols, and severe penalties for those involved in substandard construction practices. According to Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, the government is resolute in holding contractors accountable for structural failures. She also appealed to the public to hire qualified professionals for their projects, warning against the dangers of cutting corners in construction.

Starting March, the updated regulations will empower the NCA to increase the frequency of construction site inspections and enforce stricter compliance measures. The government has also committed to boosting the authority’s operational capacity through increased funding and the recruitment of more personnel to enhance oversight.

The policy also encourages sustainable practices in the industry, aiming to set higher benchmarks for safety and environmental compliance. As Kenya’s construction sector gears up for significant growth—with projections indicating a 7.1% annual increase in output, potentially reaching Sh1.35 trillion by 2028—the government’s focus on regulation is expected to bring much-needed professionalism and discipline to the industry.

With these reforms, the future of Kenya’s construction industry looks set to be safer, more sustainable, and increasingly regulated, providing a stronger foundation for growth and public trust.
