The Ondo State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, has issued a stern warning that any traditional ruler found guilty of land grabbing will face imprisonment.
Speaking in response to the ongoing deliberations on the Anti-Land Grabbing Bill before the Ondo State House of Assembly, Dr. Ajulo accused some traditional rulers of instigating land disputes for personal gain.
“Government will not hesitate to step on toes. I must speak frankly—some of our traditional rulers have created significant problems regarding land grabbing,” Ajulo stated.
He condemned the role of certain monarchs, alleging they orchestrate violence from their palaces, sending individuals to cause havoc in communities. “Many times, we’ve seen people using cutlasses and inflicting injuries on one another due to these disputes. Any Kabiyesi found culpable and sent to jail on this matter should not expect sympathy,” he warned.
Dr. Ajulo highlighted the importance of the Anti-Land Grabbing Bill in addressing illegal occupation of land and the violent acts often associated with such disputes.
In addition, he noted that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had recently signed Executive Order 2024 to address the issue of land grabbing, emphasizing the state government’s resolve to curb the menace.
“Last week, the governor signed an Executive Order to tackle this menace. This shows the government’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment. Many potential investors are reluctant to come to Ondo State because their first concern is land-related issues,” Ajulo explained.
The commissioner also revealed that the state is considering taking over disputed lands in adjoining communities to prevent recurring conflicts.
According to Ajulo, land grabbing is a worse menace than petty crimes like pickpocketing, which often attract harsh public reactions. He commended the House of Assembly for taking a revolutionary step with the proposed legislation.
“The House of Assembly’s action is commendable. As the chief law officer of the state, we will ensure the law is enforced,” he added.
Ajulo also appreciated the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Chief Olamide Oladiji, for his collaboration with the state executive to advance the state’s development.
The Anti-Land Grabbing Bill, once passed, is expected to strengthen efforts to address unlawful land disputes and ensure justice for affected communities.
