Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has announced a significant leadership transition as Dr. Lars Richter steps down as Managing Director after an impactful tenure. Peer Lubasch, currently the Chief Executive Director of Julius Berger International, has been named as his successor.
In a statement commemorating Richter’s departure, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mutiu Sunmonu, lauded the former MD for his remarkable contributions to the company. Reflecting on their six years of collaboration, Sunmonu commended Richter’s dedication and leadership, which had eased initial concerns about his ability to lead the construction giant.
“I was excited but also worried when Lars was appointed, given the scale of Julius Berger’s operations. Thankfully, those worries never materialized. His achievements, particularly in championing sustainability and women’s inclusion in the workforce, remain indelible records,” Sunmonu said.
Richter, who assumed the role of Managing Director in 2018, expressed gratitude for his journey with Julius Berger, which began 15 years ago in Abuja as a young engineer. He highlighted key accomplishments under his leadership, including the successful execution of high-priority national projects such as the River Niger Bridge, Lagos-Shagamu Expressway, and sections of the Abuja-Kano Road.
Richter also celebrated the firm’s delivery of infrastructure projects across Nigeria, including flyovers, roads, hospitals, and iconic buildings such as the FAMFA Tower in Lagos and the government house in Rivers State.
In his farewell address, Richter emphasized the implementation of the company’s three-pillar strategy—core business, subsidiaries, and diversification—as a foundation for Julius Berger’s sustained growth.
Lubasch, in his acceptance speech, paid tribute to Richter’s visionary leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to steering Julius Berger toward continued excellence. “Lars led the organization with extraordinary vision and commitment, leaving a lasting mark. As I take on this role, I am committed to building on this legacy,” Lubasch stated.
The leadership transition marks a new chapter for Julius Berger, as the company aims to further its reputation as a leader in engineering construction across Nigeria and beyond.
