13 Months On, Tinubu Yet to Appoint Ambassadors

Thirteen months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recalled Nigerian ambassadors, the country’s 109 diplomatic missions remain without full ambassadorial representation.

The affected missions include 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and one consulate, all currently overseen by chargé d’affaires.

Foreign policy experts have raised concerns, warning that the prolonged absence of ambassadors is undermining Nigeria’s international engagements and diplomatic influence. They argue that chargé d’affaires lack the rank and authority to engage directly with foreign ministers or represent Nigeria effectively at high-level forums.

Retired diplomat Ambassador Suleiman Dahiru criticized the administration’s approach, stating, “Before recalling ambassadors, replacements should have been prepared. Career diplomats are now losing opportunities due to impending retirements.”

The delay is further complicated by funding challenges. Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar acknowledged that financial constraints have stalled the appointment process. “It’s pointless to appoint ambassadors without resources to support their missions,” he explained, assuring that the matter is being addressed.

Despite government assurances that embassy operations remain unaffected, experts emphasize the urgency of appointing ambassadors to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations and ensure follow-up on agreements secured during the president’s international visits.
