Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has announced a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants, following recommendations from the state’s committee on minimum wage.
The announcement was made at the Jigawa State Government House in Dutse, where Governor Namadi emphasized the need to fairly compensate the state’s workforce for their service.
“After receiving the committee’s report on the minimum wage, we have decided to implement a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for our workers,” Governor Namadi said.
He underscored the administration’s commitment to the welfare of Jigawa’s civil servants, stating that the decision was carefully made in response to the current economic situation and the state’s financial capacity.
“We recognize the challenges posed by the rising cost of living, and we believe this wage increase will help ease the financial pressures on our workers,” he added.
The wage increase has been well received by civil servants across the state who had been anticipating an adjustment to cope with inflation. Governor Namadi assured the public that the new wage structure would be rolled out promptly, with measures in place to ensure a smooth implementation.
The committee, which was tasked with reviewing the salary structure, applauded the governor’s swift action. Their report took into account various economic factors, including inflation, and highlighted the importance of sustaining a motivated workforce.
This development comes as other states across Nigeria, including Kebbi and Enugu, are also adjusting their minimum wages in response to national economic pressures. Earlier this year, President Bola Tinubu approved ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage for federal workers, doubling the previous minimum of ₦30,000.
