Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced a N20 billion allocation to reconstruct damaged infrastructure caused by recent flooding and to provide support for affected victims.
This major initiative was revealed on Saturday at the Government House in Maiduguri, where Zulum inaugurated a committee to investigate the cause of the collapse of Alau Dam, a key factor in the disaster.
According to a statement from the state government, Zulum explained that 50% of the allocated funds—N10 billion—will be used to provide direct assistance to flood victims. This support will help residents recover and rebuild their lives after the devastation caused by the flooding.
The governor directed that the N10 billion be credited to the state’s relief account, with the distribution overseen by a disbursement committee that includes the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and security agencies.
The remaining N10 billion will be managed by the state’s Ministry of Works and Housing to rebuild critical infrastructure damaged by the floods.
Governor Zulum also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the federal government for their assistance, including substantial food donations from the Ministry of Agriculture. He also commended individuals, other state governments, corporate organizations, and NGOs for their generous contributions to Borno State during this challenging time.
Additionally, Zulum instructed the committee responsible for investigating the Alau Dam’s collapse to submit its findings to the state government within four weeks, signaling the urgency of addressing the causes of the flooding.
This decisive action is part of the state government’s broader effort to restore normalcy and improve the resilience of Borno’s infrastructure against future natural disasters.
