The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has reported 271 fire incidents and rescued 11 lives within the FCT between January and August 2024.
The service also revealed that property worth N8.23 billion was saved, while N1.96 billion in assets were lost during the same period.
During a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, the acting director of the FCT Fire Service, Mr. Adebayo Amiola, disclosed this. Amiola emphasized the importance of fire-preventive measures, especially in markets, to minimize the risk of fire outbreaks in the capital.
Ban on Sleeping in FCT Markets
To further curb fire hazards, Amiola announced that the fire service, with the support of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has banned traders from sleeping in markets across the territory. Market managers have been instructed to ensure all traders leave the premises immediately after the day’s trading activities.
“All market managers have been directed to prevent traders from sleeping in the markets. Fire safety is a top priority, and anyone who violates this directive will face penalties,” Amiola said.
Additionally, market managers are required to ensure that access roads remain unblocked, prohibiting the display of goods or the construction of makeshift shops that could hinder emergency responses.
Fire Safety Awareness Campaigns
In preparation for the dry season, Amiola stated that the FCT Fire Service had begun fire safety sensitization programs, particularly targeting schoolchildren, with the aim of spreading fire prevention knowledge throughout the community. The service will also launch a Fire Safety Week from October 7 to 11, during which fire safety education and prevention activities will take place across the FCT, including visits to Area Councils.
“We are committed to raising awareness on fire safety throughout the FCT. Our teams will be visiting every corner to educate residents on preventive measures for both homes and businesses,” Amiola explained.
New Fire Emergency Monitoring Gateway Set for Launch
In anticipation of the harmattan season, the FCT Administration plans to inaugurate a Fire Emergency Monitoring Gateway on September 29. This initiative aims to reduce the number of fire incidents, which have been a significant problem during the dry season, particularly in open markets.
In August, the Kaura Modern Market in Abuja experienced a devastating fire, destroying around 40 shops and causing significant losses to traders.
Amiola commended the FCT Minister for his continued support and reiterated the agency’s commitment to improving fire response times and ensuring the safety of residents. He also urged motorists to give the right of way to fire trucks during emergencies to enhance response efficiency.
