NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rain across various parts of the country from Tuesday through Thursday.

This forecast, released in a weather outlook on Monday, highlights potential heavy rainfall in several regions.

On Tuesday morning, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, and Kaduna states, with more storms predicted later in the day across these areas.

In the North Central region, thunderstorms are anticipated over Kogi, Benue, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Niger states in the morning. Later in the day, the FCT, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa states are expected to experience thunderstorms as well.

In the southern region, moderate rains are forecasted for parts of Ebonyi, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers states during the morning, with intermittent rains likely to continue throughout the day.

On Wednesday, early morning thunderstorms are predicted in Taraba, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, and Kaduna states, with the likelihood of further thunderstorms in Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi later in the day.

Similarly, the North Central region will experience morning thunderstorms in parts of the FCT, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara states, with thunderstorms continuing into the afternoon in Nasarawa, Kogi, the FCT, Kwara, and Niger states.

For the southern states, thunderstorms are expected over Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Edo, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa in the morning, with widespread storms predicted to persist throughout the day.

By Thursday, NiMet forecasts thunderstorms in the morning across Sokoto, Kebbi, Taraba, and Adamawa, with further storms expected later in Borno, Bauchi, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa states. The FCT and Nasarawa state will also likely experience thunderstorms.

In the southern region, isolated thunderstorms are forecasted in parts of Osun, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, and Bayelsa states during the morning.

NiMet has advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas, warning of the high risk of urban flooding in major cities due to the heavy rainfall. The public is urged to take necessary precautions, as strong winds may precede thunderstorms. The agency also advised airline operators and residents to stay updated with the latest weather reports for safe planning and operations.
