1. President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr. Tanimu Yakubu as the new Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, succeeding Mr. Ben Akabueze whose tenure has expired. Mr. Yakubu, an accomplished economist, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Chief Economic Adviser to a former President, Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, and Commissioner of Finance in Katsina State.
2. Some residents of Abaji area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) set the corpse of a suspected armed robber ablaze, on Thursday. The robbers invaded a bank in the town around 5:30pm. Confirming the news, a police officer told reporters that the robbers first attacked the police station along Toto road where an inspector simply identified as Abila was shot dead.
3. The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the suit the Federal Government filed to secure full autonomy for the 774 Local Government Areas in the country. A seven-man panel of the court, led by Justice Garba Lawal okayed the matter for judgment, after governors of the 36 states of the Federation, through their respective Attorney-Generals, adopted their briefs of argument.
4. Traders in Kano have protested the demolition of over 5,000 stalls located on IBB Way in the Metropolis by the Kano State Government’s Urban Planning and Development Authority. The authority had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the traders, which expired on Wednesday. The stalls were razed to the ground, with the agency citing illegal occupation of the area as the reason for the action.
5. About 20,000 people in the Jakande Estate area of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area in Lagos State have been displaced from their homes, following floods that ravaged the community between May and June 2024. According to a post-disaster assessment carried out by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the floods, triggered by heavy rains, also resulted in the collapse of several buildings in the area, leaving thousands homeless and in dire need of assistance.

6. Tragedy struck at Bazakwoi of Adunu Community, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State as another mining pit collapsed at an illegal gold mining site, resulting in the deaths of no fewer than three persons while one other victim was rescued with injuries at the scene. Director General, Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Malam Abdullahi Baba Arah confirmed this saying no one was trapped in the collapsed mine.
7. The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has put up assets of Heritage Bank for sale. The assets include vehicles, office equipment, plant, and machinery across the nation.
This follows the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s revocation of the bank’s licence two weeks ago, after it was found to have violated five different provisions of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020.
8. Africa’s richest person, Aliko Dangote, has revealed that both local and foreign mafia tried several times to sabotage his $19 billion refinery from coming to fruition. This is as he said he has repaid about $2.4 billion of the $5.5 billion borrowed to build the refinery. always exist, but he did not anticipate it being so harsh.

9. The two construction workers, who were initially trapped at the five-storey building collapsed at the premises of Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State, have been rescued. The building, under construction, caved in at about 7:15 am on Wednesday, trapping the three of the workers.
10. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has alerted on increasing cholera cases nationwide, with 30 deaths, 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cases reported. Disclosing this in a public advisory, the Director-General of the centre, Dr. Jide Idris, said the cases, which occurred between January and June 11, 2024, were reported from 96 LGAs in 30 states.
